In 1861 to 1865, the Civil War was fought between the North (economy based on industry) and South (economy based on agriculture), over culture, power of the federal government over states and slavery. During the Civil War, 600,000 men (mostly white husbands, white fathers and white sons) died in the fight to end slavery. Those on the left conveniently leave this out of every conversation about slavery.
How Many Slave Owners Were there in 1850?
Per “The Statistical View of the United States, Compendium of the Seventh Census,” published in 1854 by DeBow and James Dunwoody Brownson, for the year 1850, the population of pro-slavery states was 9.6 million, and of these, 350,000 (3.6%) were southern slave owners. This percentage is actually much lower, since it only includes states where slavery was allowed, and it would be a much smaller prerentage if you factor in ALL of the states.
