We’re in a situation pretty much like Martin Niemöller described in Germany of the 1940s. He famously said,
Facebook's "fact checkers" have the ability to destroy anyone who doesn't buy into their bipartisan ideals. This is why Candace Owens is suing Facebook's fact checkers called "Lead Stories," run by a former CNN employee who slanders conservative content. Lead Stories is funded by Facebook, Google, ByteDance, and a few others. ByteDance is a Chinese company who owns TikTok that our Justice Dept. says is a national security threat. Is it okay for a Chinese company to censure American opinions?
12/10/2020: Sky News Australia: Sky News host Paul Murray says big tech disproportionately censored pro-Trump content as opposed to content from those who "peddled many of the craziest lies" over the past four years.
Mainstream media was driven by the left to ensure President Trump was not re-elected, according to Mr Murray. The media stopped covering the president and would cut him off mid-speech throughout the campaign, he said.
Mr. Murray said big tech ignored President Trump’s achievements and brought every scandal to the "front of the queue.”
“To avoid the alternative to Donald Trump having any negative baggage coming with him, they literally did not talk of any scandals,” he said. “Remember when Twitter banned any conversation and any serious reporting about Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden?
"It is disproportionately those who led to the mistake of Donald Trump who were censored, as opposed to those who peddled many of the craziest lies of the past four years."
Mr. Murray pointed to a recent move by YouTube to remove all videos of Donald Trump’s narrative of what occurred at the recent presidential election.
“YouTube is now going to not put a warning on videos that help explain Donald Trump’s version of what happened at this election, they are removing them, totally gone, banned,” he said.
When freedom of speech is gone, that’s not a great move.
By Tristan Justice: 1/1/21: The president of Uganda temporarily banned Facebook and Twitter from the country this week in the final hours leading up to elections on Thursday, arguing the platforms engaged in unfair censorship to prop up the opposition candidate.
Don Wanyama, a spokesman for Uganda President Yoweri Museveni, took aim at Facebook for stripping accounts linked to the incumbent’s campaign.
“Facebook is interfering in the electoral process of Uganda,” Wanyama said. “If people wanted to have evidence of outside interference, now they have it.”
The censorship prompted Museveni to implement a ban on all big tech operations in the African country as its voter’s head to the polls.
Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Skype, Snapchat, Viber, and Google Play were among a long list of online platforms that were down.
Twitter, which joined Facebook and Instagram to permanently ban President Donald Trump from its platform last week, condemned the censorship on Tuesday. “We strongly condemn internet shutdowns,” the Silicon Valley tech giant released in a statement, while they themselves were shutting down thousands of conservative accounts in an online purge.

Comments from the People of Uganda Regarding The Ban on Big Tech Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Skype, Snapchat, Viber, and Google Play):
2/1/21: by Ryan Green: It’s not just President Trump and MyPillow Mike Lindell who are facing the wrath of Twitter. Now, the social-media giant suspended Focus on the Family, an influential Christian-based family organization.
The supposed crime? Its “Daily Citizen” publication stated factual information regarding the biological sex of Rachel Levine, President Biden’s assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services.
“Big Tech titans are the new emperors of the twenty-first century, wielding an inordinate amount of power by silencing individuals and organizations that don’t comport or cave to their political or social point of view,” wrote Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family.
The tweet included: “Dr. Levine is a transgender woman, that is, a man who believes he is a woman.” It seems, according to Twitter, simply acknowledging biological fact is now “hateful.” The article itself had absolutely nothing to do with Dr. Levine’s “trans” identification. It had to do with his fitness for the job based on his previous record.
We’ve asked Twitter to explain what was wrong with our wording and even asked them how we might describe Dr. Levine to their liking. At this writing, we haven’t heard back.
Over the course of the last week, President Biden has been stressing the need for unity - but You will comply - or be silenced.
1/26/21: by Mimi Nguyen Ly: Twitter suspended MyPillow founder and CEO Mike Lindell, with a message, “You’re trying to follow user that doesn’t exist,” before it said Lindell’s account was suspended for violating Twitter rules. Lindell’s Twitter had over half a million followers.
Trump repeatedly called for peace and condemned violence. Despite this, he was banned from Twitter and other social media, while some supporters were also banned by Twitter and fired by employers.
A supporter of former President Trump, Lindell was advocating election integrity amid allegations of widespread voting irregularities and 2020 election fraud.
Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, and Wayfair will no longer carry MyPillow products, after groups such as Sleeping Giantspushed companies to stop doing business with him. Sleeping Giants, a leftist activist group, shared this on Twitter. The group accused Lindell of encouraging the breach of the Capitol by calling for election integrity. Sleeping Giantscampaigns to pressure companies to shun conservative and right-leaning entities. It also shared the news of Lindell’s suspension from Twitter.
“These groups were hired to attack and crush my companies to cancel MyPillow. They’re attacking people, like Bed Bath & Beyond,” Lindell told NTD News. “They succumb to the pressure. And you know, that’s their choice. But this is the time we have to make a stand and not back down to media and cancel culture. We can’t live in fear this time. We got to all stand together. And I’m not talking politics. I’m talking people.”
Lindell is also facing possible litigation from Dominion Voting Systems over his accusations their machines and software contributed to election fraud. Lindell said he hopes Dominion will sue him so he can present evidence.

1/17/18: By Jim Hoft: Anti-conservative hate group Sleeping Giants, worked since the 2016 election to bankrupt conservative groups by targeting their advertisers. Matt Rivitz devoted his life to destroy and eliminate opposing voices in America. Rivitz and his hate site Sleeping Giants smears and slanders conservatives. Their goal is to keep the internet free from conservative, patriotic voices.
Sleeping Giants waged an intense campaign to pressure Breitbart’s advertisers io pull their ads from the website.
Breitbart lost 90 % of its advertisers in 2017. Sleeping Giants pressured investors in 2017 in Renaissance Technologies to pull investments because the company’s CEO, had a financial stake in Breitbart.
Sleeping Giants also boosted a boycott of Fox News. Rivitz’ group posted the name, position and email address of a Hulu vice president and encouraged tens of thousands to email her and demand the streaming website boycott Ingraham’s show.
Sleeping Giants, along with other far-left groups, aim to drive conservative media off the web through social media campaigns directed at their advertisers. By scaring advertisers with phony allegations of “hate” and “bigotry” against conservative media, Sleeping Giants hopes to scare advertising revenue away from targeted websites.
Now, Sleeping Giants is frantically demanding that Twitter censor accounts talking about their founder!
Jimmy Wilson: 1/10//21: Americans live in a “corporate oligarchy” where major companies and big tech giants Facebook and Twitter control thoughts and actions, Phill Kline, Director of the Amistad Project, said.
“(Facebook CEO) Zuckerberg spent more money than the federal government on the 2020 election,” said Kline, while commenting on the growing censorship of conservative views, including the move by most major social media sites to block President Trump.
“You’ve got broad-based censorship supported by the left,” Kline said. We don’t have a free country anymore.
He added, “they determine what we get to read, think, and how we get to act on what we think. And that’s not a free America.”
Dan Gainor, the VP of MRC TechWatch, commented big tech corporations are the “most powerful companies in human history.”
“Google controls search for 92% of the world, and Twitter, of course, reaches all the influencers.”
The companies decided “collectively” that conservative speech must be shut down,” Gainor added. “So they start with the president… but look who’s still on, the leader of Iran who called for genocide of Israel. It’s crazy.”

Jimmy Wilson: 1/12/21: German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Merkel thinks Twitter’s ban on President Donald Trump’s accounts is “problematic,” the Associated Press reported Monday.
Steffen Seibert, Merkel’s spokesman, told reporters in Berlin that those running social media platforms “bear great responsibility for political communication not being poisoned by hatred, by lies and by incitement to violence.”
However, he said that freedom of opinion is an intrinsic right carrying “elementary significance,” according to the AP. “This fundamental right can be intervened in, but not according to a decision by the management of social media platforms,” Seibert continued. “Seen from this angle, the chancellor considers it problematic that the accounts of the U.S. president have now been permanently blocked.”

Ryan Green: 10/21/20: Lawmakers are concerned with foreign interference in the election, but what if the call is actually coming from inside our house? Project Veritas reports allegations of election interference by Google, using its monopoly to warp search-engine results and content on its platforms to favor Democrats. Its latest undercover video features a disgusted technical manager at Google accusing his employer of “playing selective god” with its market domination to advance its “leftist agenda.”
“I feel suffocated at Google,” said Ritesh Lakhkar, a technical program manager in Google’s Cloud division, to a Project Veritas undercover journalist. “Because on one side you have this professional or unprofessional attitude, and on the other side, you have this ultra-leftist attitude, and your entire existence is questioned.”
Lakhkar said Google exercises deity-like control over the information Americans receive. “You’re like playing selective God,” he said.
The video doesn’t tell us much that we don’t already know - Google manipulates search results for its own purposes.
Inaction in Washington has stood in stark contrast to the antitrust scrutiny Google faced in Europe, where regulators slapped the tech behemoth with $9 billion in fines.

Jimmy Wilson: 1/9/21: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram permanently banned hundreds, if not thousands, of Trump supporters and prominent allies - before banning the president himself. Nearly every account that helped promote the Stop the Steal rallies or challenge the election results were banned, including Ali Alexander, Michael Coudrey, Gen. Mike Flynn, Sidney Powell, and Lin Wood. Countless smaller accounts that supported the president were also getting suspended.
These same companies showed absolutely no concern when Black Lives Matter domestic terrorists were plotting their next attacks on their platforms, often with the endorsement of Democrat politicians.
Parler Chief Executive John Matze responded to the threat; “Apparently they believe Parler is responsible for ALL user generated content on Parler. By the same logic, Apple must be responsible for ALL actions taken by their phones. Every car bomb, every illegal cell phone conversation, every illegal crime committed on an iPhone, Apple must also be responsible for.”
By 7 pm, it was reported President Trump joined Parler. By 7:46 pm, Parler was banned from the Google Play store.
Buckle up. They want you silenced.

Ryan Green: 1/12/21: Twitter joined other social media in permanently suspending Trump’s accounts. Subsequently, many other conservative users found themselves deplatformed by the tech giant. Trump has also been blocked from Facebook and Instagram.
Twitter argued several of Trump’s tweets violated its Glorification of Violence policy. Unsurprisingly, there are countless Twitter accounts that regularly call for harm or violence in violation of this policy, yet have been allowed to persist.
Ayatollah Khamenei, the leader of Iran, has a Twitter account that consistently glorifies violence, yet the brutal dictator has not faced censorship or suspension. After the beheading of a French teacher and a mass stabbing in a church in Nice, Khamenei focused vitriol on those murdered, claiming the “rage” of Muslim extremists had demonstrated its “vitality.”
Gab, a more friendly alternative social media platform to Twitter, claimed it is gaining 10,000 users an hour in the wake of Twitter permanently suspending President Trump’s account.
Twitter Shares Tumble More Than 10% After Site Permanently Bans Trump

Jimmy Wilson: 1/10/21: Twitter acts in favor of one interest and one interest alone: its own, even when it means destabilizing American people. Twitter attempted and largely succeeded in silencing dissent to policies that were against its own interests.
Twitter banned Dr. Scott Atlas for defending President Trump’s position on mask mandates. He cited scientific studies, containing absolutely no false information. Twitter banned The New York Post for accurately reporting about Hunter Biden’s laptop.
The company permanently banned Trump and began a purge of conservative voices. They say to protect America from a coup. That is a lie. They did it because their political enemies are now out of power, and they mean to keep it way.
Twitter played a central role in destroying Americans’ lives through lockdowns, lying about Hunter Biden to win an election, and enabling the world’s most brutal regime to practice genocide in peace. They don’t care about suicides, overdoses, missed cancer screenings, or poverty caused by these actions, they only care about money and power.
Blood is dripping from Jack Dorsey’s hands across the globe and here at home as he counts his billions. This has to do with Dorsey being a liar who orchestrates mass disinformation for profit.
Twitter doesn’t want to serve you; it wants to rule you. And it is well on its way. Twitter is the enemy of freedom, the enemy of liberty, and the enemy of the American people. It must be treated as such.

1/4/21: Richard Moorhead: Massive Double Standard. Facebook purged a massive “Joe Biden is Not My President” group without warning, deleting the group after it reached 1.7 million members.
Left-wing liberal Democrats vocalized identical sentiment throughout Trump’s presidency, claiming President Trump was not the head of state on the basis of discredited Russia conspiracy theories.
Big Tech has a far different standard for criticizing the legitimacy of Biden even though 39% of Americans believe the 2020 presidential election was rigged on the basis of widespread voter fraud.
To fight back against Big Tech censorship, the group established a news aggregator to highlight news and events to the group. Joebidenisnotmypresident.news will be impervious from Big Tech tyrants to silence and delete content critical of Biden.
People who did not like President Trump got to say he was not their president on Facebook. However, in keeping with digital fascism, Facebook banned republicans who feel the same about Biden. Isn't Facebook dictatorship great for freedom of speech?
Post Editorial Board: 1/28/20: For all their talk of “neutral platforms,” the Big Shots at Big Tech - Twitter, Facebook and Google - are running a protection racket. They dictate what Americans see and read, and what other media companies must do. It’s a clear threat to democracy.
Twitter’s strong-arm tactics censored The Post ever since we began reporting on Hunter Biden’s emails. First, it froze our account and banned our stories; then, it agreed to unfreeze us - but only if we deleted our original tweets.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sounded like a mob enforcer and shakedown artist and he knows media outlets depend on social media, and Google search algorithms to help readers access reporting.
Sen. Ted Cruz wasn’t fooled: “ “Mr. Dorsey, who the hell elected you and put you in charge of what the media are allowed to report, and what the American people are allowed to hear?” “Why do you persist in behaving as a Democrat super PAC, silencing views to the contrary of your political beliefs?”
Dorsey tried to claim it was a mistake, but The Post account remained locked. "Can the New York Post, post on their Twitter account?” Cruz asked. “if it was an honest error, why do they only happen to one side? Sen. Marsha Blackburn noted, Twitter “censored” President Trump 65 times and Biden zero. “
Twitter and Facebook, which also moved to suppress The Post’s reporting, cannot claim there’s anything wrong with the stories. Asked if they had any “evidence” of that, Dorsey and Facebook CEO Zuckerberg both admitted they didn’t.
Ryan Green: 1/12/21: Parler alleges breach of contractual notice of termination requirement, and political motivation: “Friday night one of the top trending tweets on Twitter was ‘Hang Mike Pence.’ But AWS has no plans nor has it made any threats to suspend Twitter’s account.”
The takedown of Parler by the cabal of Google, Apple, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), joined by other vendors who now are afraid to deal with Parler, is one of the most dangerous moments for internet freedom.
The claim that Parler represents some unique risk to public safety is a lie driven by politics. The truth is that Parler was taken down because it is viewed by leftist tech giants as pro-Trump, and the growing home to conservative media stars and others disaffected by liberal social media platforms.
Parler sued AWS. You can read the Complaint and Motion for Temporary Restraining Order (pdfs). From the Complaint in the full article. And yes, Twitter uses AWS. How convenient to wipe out their competition.
We need to consider our alliances. The reality is that these internet oligopolies are so politically corrupt that their exercise of omnipotent power is a threat to all our freedoms.
Nov. 24, 2020: Research Psychologist and author Robert Epstein joins 'Tucker Carlson Tonight' with insight.
Digital Fascism: In 2016 Google said along with Facebook and Twitter they could sway any election by controlling what information they'd allow people to see and hear. Whistle blowers from google have been warning about this for years and now they have done it.
There is scientific proof found out by a group of democrat psychologists. (Who by the way voted for Biden) that Google manipulated data to sway this 2020 election in Biden's favor.
If you’re a Democrat you might think what Big Tech did was ok to help your side by cheating, but you don't know what they will do next in this country or others. In other countries they swayed elections by supporting conservatives at times and communists at times. Whoever they choose is who their media will support and whoever they don't choose is who their media will black list. Do you really think digital fascism is ok?
Say good bye to freedom of speech and freedom of thought. This study shows the power Big Tech has was clearly effective enough to turn enough people away from Trump and toward Biden, even though Biden never ever once said what he stood for, what he would do if elected, and he never answered questions. Harris was even worse. When asked a question she would just snicker and laugh like the Joker on Batman.
If people don't learn right now, then they will learn once it’s too late, Plus it will only get worse because Big Tech will know they put something over on the public, and didn't get punished so they'll continue doing this.
They hate President Trump because he was the only person with enough guts to talk about busting up the big tech digital fascist monopolies on anti-trust laws. They know their beast was were never supposed to get this much power (per our constitution) and never supposed to be allowed to have this much control over the public. Big tech have become bullies and monsters. Now we can let the Beast in the System continue to feed on us or rise up against their tyranny.
Click the Big Tech image above to watch a Nov. 18, 2020, 14 minute video of Tucker Carlson exposing American corporations for teaming up to censor political opponents, and click the link below to watch Dr. Epstein's analysis.
Senator Ted Cruz explains Dark Money going to democrats from the wealthiest Americans. The fact is 14 of the top 20 super PAC's gave virtually all their Dark Money to Democrats. Hollywood, Wall Street and the Fortune 500 elite overwhelming gave their riches to Joe Biden. Democrats complain about the corporations and the rich, and yet corporations and the ultra-rich are the ones funding Democrats by a factor of greater than 3-1.
Long ago Republicans were considered to represent the rich in America and Democrats the middle class. Well, things have flipped. Now the majority of people donating to republicans are the middle class, farmers, blue collar workers and small business owners, while the ultra-rich, elite, Hollywood types and the largest corporations donate money to the democrats. Democrats are not the party they used to be. Democrats have left the average American and now represent the most wealthy people in America while Republicans now represent the average middle and lower class workers.
The wealthiest billionaires in America use their riches and political power to crush the life and prospects out of every American and ruin the traditional middle-class American way of life.
The middle class needs to reinforce small businesses over multinational corporations and needs to encourage entrepreneurs at local and community levels for an alternative to monopolies and the domination of the American billionaires.
Forbes Magazine released its annual list of the 400 wealthiest people in the world this week, and nine of the top ten wealthiest Americans featured on the list appear as staunch Democrats donors.
Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook and Instagram), Warren Buffett(owns 60 companies including Geico Ins, Dairy Queen and Duracell Battery), Larry Ellison (Oracle and owns 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lanai plus many more hotel properties), Steve Ballmer (former Microsoft CEO and owns the Los Angeles Clippers), Elon Musk (Tesla Motors and SpaceX), Larry Page (Alphabet and Google), Sergey Brin (co-founder of Alphabet and Google), and Alice Walton (Walmart) were named as the wealthiest American citizens, all possessing a personal net worth of over 60 billion dollars. Nearly all of them are closely affiliated with Democrat politics in various capacities, most commonly as lavish donors to Democrat campaigns and liberal political causes.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is the only exception, who appears unaffiliated with the political left, having donated considerably more money to Republicans than Democrats in the 2018 election cycle, although he donated to Hillary Clinton in 2016. Musk has vaguely affiliated himself with some conservatives, and opposed some of California’s coronavirus lockdown policies.
Bezos hasn’t donated to Biden, but his general affiliation with Democratic politics is indicated through his tacit Bloomberg endorsement.
Alice Walton, a Walmart heiress, comes from a traditionally Republican family, but is a Biden donor with an extensive history of supporting Democrats.
The rest of the top 10 are reliable Democrat donors, donating to Republicans rarely, if at all. Mark Zuckerberg occasionally depicts himself as a political centrist independent of Silicon Valley neoliberal politics, but the Facebook platform engages in prolific censorship of conservatives, without applying the same tactics to the political left.
The wealthiest billionaire oligarchs are determined to use their political power to crush the life prospects of the everyday American and the traditional middle-class American way of life. The political right and real conservatives should oppose this at every turn, reinstating an economic vision that upholds small businesses over multinational corporations and entrepreneurship at a local, community level as an alternative to the domination of monopoly billionaires.
Pure Oligarchy, Greed and Corruption
Sep 11, 2020, By Richard Moorhead
The following article is an analogy with an apology to the Jewish Nation for comparing their plight to current times, for nothing can even come close to the torturous suffering the Jewish Nation endured by Nazi Rule. However, it is important that we remember history, remember the suffering of the Jewish People, and never forget or cancel out the misery they had to endure. We also need to assure this never happens again, to anyone.
This is only done as a warning, so that history does not repeat itself. The democrat party has not been a friend of Israel, exhibits antisemitic actions, and their current tactics are eerily similar to the tactics of the Nazi Gestapo. In addition to being antisemitic, the leftist democrat party is also steering towards totalitarianism, so they do not want any discussion, or dissenting views or opinions to be heard.
Take the Definition of the Nazi Gestapo (on this page), and Replace Jews with Conservatives; Replace The Gestapo with Leftist Big Tech; and Replace Nazis with Democrats. Then update the technology and change Wiretaps to The Internet, Google, Facebook and Twitter, and change Mail to Email.
Their platform sounds too similar to what we are seeing being repeated today, with censorship and cancel culture by Big Tech and the Cult of Leftism, in coordination with Ultra Rich Corporations and Mainstream Media.
Leftist Big Tech was the secret police of the Democrats, a notorious organization tasked with destroying political opponents of the Democrat movement, suppressing any opposition to Democrat policies, and persecuting Conservatives.
Leftist Big Tech investigated any person or organization suspected of opposing the Democrat movement.
Leftist Big Tech operated by intimidation, using surveillance and interrogation.
Leftist Big Tech collected information on anyone suspected of opposing Democrat rule.
As a secret force, Leftist Big Tech was instrumental in identifying and apprehending those who would be sent to camps.
Leftist Big Tech itself was purged of anyone suspected of sympathy to Conservatives.
Leftist Big Tech became obsessed with accumulating information. When the Democrat Party rose to power, an intelligence operation aimed at any potential enemies became a vital part of the party apparatus.
Democrats started keeping files on those suspected of opposition to Democrat doctrine. The files grew from a simple operation to an extensive network comprising information gathered from informers, the internet, Google, Facebook, Twitter, intercepted email, and confessions extracted from those taken into custody.
As all were eventually brought under the auspices of Leftist Big Tech, prying eyes seemed everywhere. All levels of society were essentially under permanent investigation.
The fanatical accumulation of information became Leftist Big Tech's greatest weapon. Any deviation from Democrat policy was quickly ferreted out and suppressed, usually with brutal methods, for Leftist Big Tech operated by intimidation.

Historical Information Gathered from: The Gestapo: Definition and History of the Nazi Secret Police, Surveillance, Intimidation, and Torture Enforced Nazi Rule, By Robert McNamara, Updated September 27, 2019.
By Robert Longley, Updated October 30, 2020: Totalitarianism is a form of government that prohibits opposing political parties and ideologies, while controlling all aspects of the public and private lives of the people. Under a totalitarian regime, all citizens are subject to the absolute authority of the state.
Totalitarianism is a system of government under which the people are allowed virtually no authority, with the state holding absolute control.
Totalitarianism is considered an extreme form of authoritarianism, in which government controls almost all aspects of the public and private lives of the people.
Most totalitarian regimes are ruled by autocrats or dictators that typically violate basic human rights and deny common freedoms in maintaining total control over their citizens.
Often regarded as the most extreme form of authoritarianism, totalitarianism is generally identified by dictatorial centralized rule dedicated to controlling all public and private aspects of individual life, to the benefit of the state, through coercion, intimidation, and repression.
Totalitarian states are typically ruled by autocrats or dictators who demand unquestioned loyalty and control public opinion through propaganda distributed via government-controlled media. An even darker description of living under totalitarianism comes from George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984, when the main character Winston Smith is told by Thought Police interrogator O’Brien, “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.”
Both totalitarianism and authoritarianism depend on quashing all forms of individual freedom. However, their methods differ. Through largely passive techniques such as propaganda, authoritarian states work to win the blind, voluntary submission of their citizens. In contrast, totalitarian regimes employ extreme measures such as secret police forces and imprisonment to control the private and political lives of their citizens. While totalitarian states typically demand a practically religious loyalty to a single highly developed ideology, most authoritarian states do not. Unlike totalitarian states, authoritarian states are limited in their ability to force the entire population to adopt and pursue the regime’s goals for the nation.
While they differ individually, totalitarian states have several characteristics in common. The two most notable characteristics shared by all totalitarian states are an overarching ideology addressing all aspects of life as the means of attaining the state’s final goal, and a single, all-powerful political party, usually led by a dictator.
All citizens are required to adopt and serve a single apocalyptical ideology dedicated to defeating a shadowy and corrupt old order to be replaced by a new, racially pure, utopian society. Renouncing all traditional forms of political orientation - liberal, conservative, or populist - the totalitarian ideology demands a virtually religious and unconditional personal devotion to a single charismatic leader.
Unwavering and total loyalty to both the regime’s ideology and its leader are demanded. Total obedience to authority is required and enforced through physical intimidation and the threat of imprisonment. Citizens are made to be aware that they are under constant surveillance.
Individual thought is discouraged and publicly ridiculed as a potential threat to the goals of the state ideology. As often attributed to totalitarian Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, “Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?” All basic liberties, such as the freedoms of speech and assembly, are denied and punishable.
Totalitarian governments control all mass media, including art and literature. This control enables the regime to produce a constant stream of propaganda designed to “gaslight” the people and prevent them from realizing the hopelessness of their situation. Often riddled with clichéd, confusing catchphrases, this propaganda is typified by the totalitarian government
To further its predatory militaristic goals, totalitarian regimes own and control all aspects of the economy, including capital and all means of production. The personal economic incentives of capitalism are thus rendered impossible. Theoretically unburdened by the independent thought and effort required to succeed under a capitalistic system, individual citizens are free to concentrate solely on furthering the regime’s ideological goals.
Domestic terrorism conducted in support of the regime against dissidents is celebrated through the wearing of party uniforms and the use of complimentary metaphors for terrorists such as “storm troopers,” “freedom fighters,” or “labor brigades.” To further rally universal support for their ideology, totalitarian regimes strive to convince all individuals that they are civilian soldiers in an endless war, against an often loosely-defined evil enemy.
As early as 430 BCE, a system of rule resembling totalitarianism was applied in the ancient Grecian state of Sparta. Established under King Leonidas I, Sparta’s “educational system” was essential to its totalitarian society, in which every aspect of life, down to the rearing of children, was dedicated to maintaining the state’s military might. In his “Republic,” written around 375 BCE, Plato described a rigidly caste-based totalitarian society in which the citizens served the state and not vice versa. In Ancient China, the Qin Dynasty (221–207 BCE) was ruled by the philosophy of Legalism, under which political activity was virtually prohibited, all literature was destroyed, and those who opposed or questioned Legalism were executed.
After rising to power in 1922, Mussolini’s Fascist police state eliminated virtually all constitutional and political restraints on his power. In 1935, Italy was declared a totalitarian state by the Doctrine of Fascism: “The Fascist conception of the State is all-embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value. Thus understood, Fascism is totalitarian …” Through propaganda and intimidation, Mussolini built a nationalistic fervor, convincing all “loyal” Italians to abandon their individualism and willingly die for their leader and the Italian state. In 1936, Mussolini agreed to join Nazi Germany as one of the Axis Powers of World War II.
Coming to power in 1928, Joseph Stalin’s secret police force had eliminated all potential opposition within the Communist Party by 1934. During the ensuing Great Terror in 1937 and 1938, millions of innocent Soviet citizens were either arrested and executed or sent to labor camps. By 1939, the Soviet people were so fearful of Stalin that mass arrests were no longer necessary. Stalin ruled as the absolute dictator of the Soviet Union throughout World War II and until his death in March 1953.
Between 1933 and 1945, dictator Adolf Hitler transformed Germany into a totalitarian state where nearly all aspects of life were controlled by the government - the Third Reich. Starting in 1939, from 275,000 to 300,000 German citizens with mental or physical disabilities were murdered. During the Holocaust between 1941 and 1945, Hitler’s Einsatzgruppen “mobile killing squads” along with German armed forces murdered some six million Jews across Germany and German-occupied Europe.
Chinese communist Mao Zedong, also known as Chairman Mao, ruled the People’s Republic of China from 1949 until he died in 1976. From 1955 to 1957, Mao’s Anti-Rightist Campaign resulted in the persecution of as many as 550,000 intellectuals and political dissidents. In 1958, his Great Leap Forward agricultural to industrial conversion economic plan resulted in a famine that caused the deaths of over 40 million people. In 1966, Chairman Mao declared the Chinese Cultural Revolution, 10 years of class warfare marked by the destruction of countless cultural artifacts and the rise of Mao’s adoring “cult of personality.” Despite his nearly God-like popularity, Mao’s Cultural Revolution resulted in the deaths of thousands to millions of people.
Established as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 1948, North Korea remains the world’s longest-lasting totalitarian state. Currently ruled by Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s government is considered one of the most repressive in the world by Human Rights Watch, maintaining power through brutality and intimidation. Propaganda is widely used to support the government’s totalitarian ideology of Juche, the belief that true socialism can be achieved only through universal loyalty to a strong and independent state. Although North Korea’s constitution promises human rights, freedom of expression is restricted and the people are constantly supervised. The same constitution contradictorily defines North Korea as “a dictatorship of people’s democracy.” Politically, the constitutionally recognized Workers’ Party of Korea enjoys legal supremacy over any other political parties.
